Hi, Reader,

In honor of Black History Month, I want to share one of my favorite poems by the late Maya Angelou. What an icon—she embodied power and hope. Her words held power then and even more so today.

video preview

Here’s an excerpt:

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

On the pod. Ep 175: Storytelling to rewrite beliefs and change behaviors, with Christina Blacken

On Beyond Better this week, I’m joined by Christina Blacken, founder and chief narrative strategist of The New Quo. And wow, her personal story is as powerful as her professional journey!

Christina grew up as an outsider in Utah—one of the few Black, female, liberal individuals in a predominantly white, conservative, and Mormon environment. Experiencing firsthand how narratives about race, religion, and identity shape behavior and interactions, she realized how powerful stories can be in defining our sense of self and how we relate to others. This realization fueled her career.

Today, Christina helps leaders recognize the stories that influence their beliefs about power and leadership, so they can rewrite them in ways that foster deeper trust, belonging, and innovation. She’s trained over 14,000 leaders across nine industries, teaching them how to break through conventional leadership models and create equity-driven, status-quo-breaking organizations.

Christina brings a mix of personal and professional insights:

  • Her experience growing up as a racial and religious minority in Utah, and how it shaped her understanding of the stories we tell ourselves about power and self-worth
  • How narrative intelligence helps leaders identify and disrupt biases, improve communication, and create more inclusive and innovative environments
  • The transformative power of storytelling for behavioral change and social impact

If you’re looking for ways to move beyond better to achieve something truly transformational, join us for today’s podcast.

Featured Author: Regina Lawless’s Book is ONE year old!

It’s been one year since the release of client Regina Lawless’s beautiful, impactful book, Do You: A Journey of Success, Loss, and Learning to Live a More MeaningFULL Life.

And wow—it’s been a year of impact! I’ve watched Regina travel around the US, speaking on major stages, connecting with readers, and stepping fully into her work as a leadership coach after leaving her role as head of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Meta.

I’m deeply proud of Regina’s author success—and grateful I got to journey alongside her! Today, I consider Regina a friend and someone who exemplifies what it means to lead a meaningFULL life.

Here’s what Regina has to say one year into being a published author:

“Becoming an author has been a dream come true. In the last year I’ve had the experience of speaking on stages, conducting workshops, doing book signings, and so much more! What I enjoy most is talking directly to readers about their impressions of the book. It is so fulfilling to hear how my words made someone look at their own life differently. I am grateful for the ability to work with a fabulous book coach like Stacy Ennis to bring my journey of success, loss, and renewed living to life! In honor of the one-year anniversary of Do You, I’m launching a virtual book club, beginning Sunday, Feb 9th at 4 p.m. PT. If interested, please sign up here.”

See you February 11 at 11 a.m. ET for Working with a Marketing Assistant!

When I was first starting my marketing journey, I was overwhelmed. And as I’ve advised my book-coaching clients through their own journeys, I’ve learned that two things make it all much, much easier: systems and support.

This month, in the Author Influence Circle, we’ll be diving into these with a session on how to work with a marketing assistant.

And guess what? I’m co-presenting with the marketing assistant on my team, Rita Domingues. We’re excited to get to do this together—to pull back the curtain and share our systems for content creation, answer your questions, and support your success in authorhood and beyond.

This session is exclusive for Author Influence Circle (AIC) members.

Join the AIC now.

Writing tip: Establish a consistent writing routine.

Developing a daily writing habit signals your mind that it’s time to write, making it easier to enter a state of flow.

That’s it for this week! Have suggestions? Want to say hey? Hit reply—I love hearing from you!
