Hi, Reader,

As we close out the year, I have a few questions to ask:

What did you set out to accomplish in 2024, and did you accomplish it? Pick one goal that felt deeply important to you. Did you make it happen?

If you accomplished that goal, what will you do to celebrate? Think of something that would enable you to really feel that accomplishment. It doesn’t have to be big! I like to hike up to a summit and put my arms in the air!

If you didn’t accomplish that goal, do you still hold the desire to do so in 2025? Be really honest with yourself.

If so, what is one commitment you’ll make to ensure you accomplish it this year? Get specific. How will you make it a reality?

And if you’re feeling inspired, send me your replies to these questions! I love hearing from you.

Listen now! Episode 169: Save time and money on book editing, with Kim Foster

This week’s episode is such a treat! I’m joined by the wonderful Kim Foster, a writer and editor who loves helping authors draw out the right words for their message while navigating the nuances of language.

Along with supporting our team on all things words, and fixing all my typos in this newsletter every week, Kim is a masterful book editor and writer. In this episode, we discuss:

  1. Her journey in the field, including going back to university post-master’s in music to pursue editing and writing
  2. The types of editing needed for books (hint: there are four!)
  3. How she helps authors bring out the best in their books
  4. How aspiring authors can avoid lengthy/costly editorial work
  5. What authors should know about the editing process and choosing an editor

Kim’s clients include business owners, thought leaders, and industry professionals, many of whom are first-time authors and new to sharing their ideas with the world. She is an expert in various genres of nonfiction, including business, self-help, faith-based, memoir, and academic works.

Ghostwriter Stacy Ennis agrees that focusing on potential clients is key.

“Writing a book is a vulnerable endeavor, and I do my best to meet potential clients where they are and build trust through the content on the site, including through success stories and testimonials,” she explains.

“I also try to make it clear and easy for them to find the information they want and need, as well as provide value via my blog and podcast.”

Writing tip

Don’t be afraid to “kill your darlings,” as Stephen King puts it. Don’t fall so in love with your writing that you aren’t willing to edit, or even delete, to make the entire book better.
